Summary

Overview

Nutrise is a personalized nutrition app designed for people with dietary restrictions.

Instead of traditional calorie tracking, it helps users build a personal food library—making it easier to decide what they can and can’t eat in everyday situations.

Key Insights

  • Users with dietary restrictions repeatedly evaluate the same foods

  • Existing apps focus on tracking, not decision-making

  • Logging creates friction and leads to drop-off.

Opportunity: Simplify food decisions instead of tracking everything

My Role

  • UX/UI Designer

  • Conducted research and defined user flows

  • Created wireframes and high-fidelity designs

  • Designed the overall product experience end-to-end

Tools

  • Tools: Figma, FigJam, AI-assisted research

Key User Pain Points

People with dietary restrictions struggle to navigate everyday food decisions confidently.

  • Fragmented information
Food guidance is scattered across apps, blogs, and labels, with no single trusted source.

  • Cognitive overload
Users repeatedly research the same foods, making every decision time-consuming and mentally draining.

  • Low confidence in choices
Conflicting information and unclear labeling create anxiety and fear of making mistakes.

  • Lack of personalization
Existing tools don’t adapt to individual dietary needs, forcing users to re-evaluate decisions constantly.

These challenges reveal that the core problem isn’t tracking food—it’s confidently deciding what to eat.

Competitive Analisys

The Gap in the Market

  • Users struggle to manage multiple dietary needs at once (e.g., gluten-free + low sodium + allergies)

Existing apps are either:

  • Too generic (MyFitnessPal)

  • Too narrow (Fig)

  • Too feature-heavy but shallow (Samsung Food)

Food decisions are still time-consuming and uncertain

Nutrise’s Opportunity

Personalized, constraint-aware food intelligence

Combines:

  • Multi-restriction support

  • Real-time food scanning

  • Clear, explainable health insights

Moves beyond tracking → decision support

Affinity Mapping

I synthesized insights from user interviews, app reviews, and online forums to identify recurring behaviors and pain points.

By clustering patterns across both qualitative and quantitative data, I uncovered key user needs and grouped them into distinct behavioral segments.

Key Insights

1. Food decisions are cognitively overwhelming

  • Users constantly evaluate ingredients, risks, and trade-offs

2. Multi-restriction is the norm, not the exception

  • Allergies, conditions, culture, and lifestyle overlap

3. Trust is a major gap

  • Users rely on guesswork, labels, or conflicting sources

4. Meal planning is the biggest friction point

  • Especially for families or busy individuals

5. Emotional frustration is high

  • Anxiety, guilt, and fatigue around food choices

User Personas

Based on affinity mapping, I identified three core user types with distinct needs, behaviors, and levels of dietary complexity. These personas guided key product decisions and feature prioritization.

These personas revealed clear patterns in user needs and frustrations.
I translated these insights into user stories to define what Nutrise must deliver.
